CRMU constructed its own cable television system in 1982. On August 6, 1996, the voters of Coon Rapids overwhelmingly approved by a 87% majority the formation of a new communications utility "CRMU Localink", and put control of the utility under the Board of Trustees.

In November 1999, CRMU completed building and turned up a new (HFC) hybrid fiber-optic coaxial network. This state-of-the-art telecommunications network is designed to appeal to anyone needing basic or advanced telecommunications, CATV, or High Speed intenet conectivity. The network has the capacity to transmit voice, video and data to and from targeted locations throughout the community.
